Happy 3 week birthday!

Today marks the boys' three week birthday! It feels like the delivery was so long ago -- or just yesterday. My concept of time has felt off since their arrival. Over the last three weeks, we have spent several hours per day at the NICU (sometimes nearly all day) and have tried to have skin-to-skin time with all of them at least once per day. With Markus still in school, me still healing from the C-section and working around my pumping schedule, it makes for long days. We are so grateful to be staying at the Ronald McDonald house near the hospital (less than 5 minute drive), rather than making a 45 minute drive twice per day from home.

Three weeks postpartum

The early postpartum period has definitely been one of highs, lows and adjustment to hormones! The time during my initial hospital stay and my readmission were still kind of fuzzy due to being on pain killers, having the blood transfusion, blood pressure issues, coming down from HELLP Syndrome, exhaustion, etc. I found myself crying extremely easily -- any change in plans or small stressor had me in tears! As I approached three weeks, this has dissipated for the most part. I've felt good emotionally, but with postpartum hormones and adjustment to having three babies in the NICU definitely comes high and low moments. Overall I am thrilled and extremely grateful that our boys are here and doing well! Markus and I are just so in love with them and cannot wait for them to come home!

The pain from my C-section scar has lessened, but is still not quite 100%. I wear the abdominal binder I got at the hospital every day -- without it my scar hurts and feels less supported (if you have a C-section, ask your nurse for a binder!). I ordered a Bellefit dual closure girdle, but unfortunately the sales lady sized me incorrectly, so I'm waiting for my new size to come in the mail.

On the morning of delivery I weighed in at 197 lbs. -- a 64 lb. gain from my pre-IVF/pregnancy weight! The day after delivery I had lost 30 pounds -- that was a lot of baby, placenta, fluid and blood volume! As of today, I've lost a total of 49 lbs. and have 15 lbs. to go until I reach my pre-IVF/pregnancy weight.

A week before delivery at 28 weeks - measuring 45 inches around!

3 weeks postpartum

Other random postpartum tidbits:

- No more bloody noses or constant nasal congestion!
- My hair comes out in clumps when I brush it -- I guess this is normal and will go away soon
- I had my first drink since April -- a glass of champagne to celebrate the boys' arrival!
- I have had a few deli meat sandwiches and they've been yummy!
- I can breathe again and it feels great
- I can wear my wedding ring again, but my engagement ring is still a little small!
- Sometimes I miss having the boys in my belly and feeling their kicks and pokes :(

The Boys

The boys are continuing to do well and are making progress! There is so much to remember and so much that changes each day with three of them in the NICU, I'll just provide some highlights:

- All three have been trialled off Cpap. They are now all back on, but each time it has been for a little longer than the time before (and it's such a treat to see their faces!)
- Mariks and Julians are no longer receiving IV nutrition -- Henrijs should be off of his IV in a few days.
- Mariks and Henrijs responded well to the ibuprofen treatment for PDAs, Julians unfortunately did not, but we are hopeful that his will resolve and he can avoid surgery.
- All boys are above 3 lbs, Henrijs hit 4 lbs a day ago!
- Because Mariks and Julians no longer have IVs they got to wear clothes for the first time :) We get to start bringing preemie outfits from home for them to wear. Henrijs will also get to wear clothing as soon as his IV is out.
- While Henrijs was off Cpap, he got to practice breastfeeding with mom which was extremely special!

Our little peanut Julians (currently 3 lbs 2 oz) trying on his new outfit

Our big guy Henrijs (4 lbs) off cpap

Mariks (3 lbs 6 oz ) enjoying time off Cpap in his Christmas hat and new outfit

We continue to pray for our boys and hope that they might make it home by 36-37 weeks gestation or earlier. Of course, this can change and there are no promises, but we are hopeful!

The boys have arrived!

It has been a busy and crazy week, but undoubtedly the best week of our lives as we welcomed our three little gentlemen into this world.

At 29 weeks and 1 day our little guys made their debut.

The delivery

On Tuesday, November 17, I went in for my 29 week OB appointment at 9:00 am. Markus had class, so my mom brought me to the appointment. I had an ultrasound done and everything looked normal. My blood pressure readings, however, were not normal. I had good BP the entire pregnancy and suddenly my readings were high. The MFM midwife came to see me after the ultrasound and  told me I was going to be admitted, as my BP was above their cutoff.

My mom and I made our way over to OB triage, where I was admitted around 11:00 am. I was hooked up to fetal and contraction monitors and had some blood work done. The babies' heart rates were perfect, but it appeared I was having some small contractions. The nurse asked if I felt them and I didn't. My labs came back and showed some abnormal results as well as protein spilling into my urine. My BPs were still high. The on-call MFM OB came to see me and told me it was looking like I had developed preeclampsia and that I would be moved upstairs to labor & delivery to be monitored -- likely at least 24-48 hours. I called my husband, who was in class at the time, and told him to come over to the hospital, as I was now going to be admitted overnight.

Once in the labor & delivery room they continued to monitor my vitals, contractions and the babies' heart rates. I continued to have mild contractions, but the nurse said with triplets I could've been having them for a while and not been aware. Markus had just left for his 2:30 class when the OB came to check my cervix, which surprisingly was already dilated 3-4cm. I called Markus, who was 20 minutes into class at the time, and told him things went from a discussion about holding me off until 32-34 weeks to me being in labor in a matter of half an hour! Markus rushed over from school (which thankfully is across the street from the hospital) and was there with my mom to help me through the early stages of labor. When Markus arrived I could really feel the contractions worsening and pain wrapping around my low back. I was then started on a magnesium drip (everyone says this is the worst thing in the world, it wasn't that bad other than it makes you really groggy and SOO hot -- like I thought my face was burning off hot haha. Thankful for the nurse who gave us an ice bucket and washcloths!) Things then started happening very quickly and my memory is already hazy on the details. Sometime shortly after getting the magnesium drip and a steroid shot for the babies' lungs, the OB checked my cervix again and I was already at 6 cm. I was then told it was time for me to deliver! November 17th would be the day!

Sometime after 3:30 pm or so I was in the operating room getting prepped for our c-section. At 3:58 pm our three miracles came out crying like tiny little lambs -- I cried each time one came out! The c-section went well (other than a good amount of blood loss) and babies were all healthy upon delivery.

Mariks Olivers
3lbs 2oz, 16.5 inches

Henrijs Viktors
3lbs 8oz, 16.5 inches

Julians Augusts
2lbs 14oz, 15.5 inches

Post Partum

Post delivery things got a little complicated for me. I lost about 2.3 liters of blood during the c-section, so I had to have a blood transfusion. My lab results also indicated that I had developed HELLP Syndrome. Luckily, the blood transfusion and getting the babies out improved my labs quickly. A few days post delivery my numbers looked even better. I was discharged four days after delivery, but unfortunately was re-admitted six days post delivery for high blood pressure. The OB had put me on a BP med, but the dose wasn't high enough and I found myself having high readings, lightheadedness and dizziness. After two more days in the hospital (which helped me get additional rest, too!), my BP was finally under better control and I began feeling better.

The Babies

So far our boys have been doing great for 29 weekers! At just over a week post delivery they are breathing room air with the help of Cpaps (Mariks already had his off once for 24 hrs and the others may soon have theirs removed). They are tolerating feedings (by feeding tube) pretty well and are having the appropriate number of wet and soiled diapers. It certainly has been a rollercoaster and when it comes to preemies things can move back and forth quickly, so we celebrate the good news when we receive it. We look forward to their discharge and in the meantime continue to pray for their health.

We are so in love with our little guys! :)

28 week update - Third Trimester!

How far along: 28 weeks 6 days
Weight gain/loss: My home scale has been reading 190. That would put me at a 53 pound gain -- hard on those knees!
Symptoms: My welcome into the third trimester has been a little rough. I think we're now entering the really tough phase. This week mornings have been better than afternoons & evenings. I've had swollen ankles and feet all week (blood pressure is still OK). Have had more trouble with sleeping, some heartburn and the usual nasal congestion/nose bleeds.
Maternity clothes: Some of my shirts are starting to barely cover the belly ;)
Sleep: When I first lie down at night it's been taking me 15-20 minutes to get comfortable breathing. I think the shift of (heavy) weight from standing to a horizontal position is taking time for my body to get used to. It sort of feels like I'm being choked and gasping for air. Once I get comfy, then I'm able to sleep for 1-2 (sometimes 3 if I'm lucky!) hours at a time. Getting out of bed is a little more work than it used to be, too.
Best moment this week: I was able to spend some time with my aunt Astrida after one of my appointments this week. :)
Movement: Tons!
Food cravings (& gestational diabetes update): I'm sort of blocking out cravings now and focusing on my gestational diabetes diet -- which really is just healthy choices, portion control and carb counting. I will note that I haven't had a single high reading now that I'm checking my blood sugar at home. All of my fasting readings have been between 61-68 (60-95 is normal) and only three of my 1-hour post meal readings have been over 100 (should be less than 140). To be honest, the GD diagnosis has helped me get back to my healthier pre-pregnancy diet faster, but I am feeling sort of skeptical about the results of the 3-hour test. I think that toxic Glucola drink shocked my system! However, I'd be curious to see what a reading would be 1 hour after eating a milkshake or a full plate of waffles and syrup.
Belly measurement: Biggest part of the belly is now 45 inches!
Gender: 3 Boys!!
Prayers: I'm praying to make it to the next target -- our 30s!
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No -- but still having itchy belly. I've started putting coconut oil on my belly several times per day.
Mood: It's been another challenging week, but trying to keep those spirits up and enjoy this time Markus and I have as a family of two, as well as naps and quiet time whenever I'd like.
Looking forward to: Seeing how things are going with our trio at next week's appointment. Excited to see my sister again in two weeks!

27 week update

How far along: 27 weeks 6 days
Weight gain/loss: I was 184 at my appointment this week (47 lb. gain)
Symptoms: Congestion/nose bleeds as per usual, some painful kicking/baby movement, generally not feeling well after about 5 pm (belly gets really heavy, lots of pelvic floor pressure, tired, worn out, etc.)
Maternity clothes: I got one more pair of lounge jogger pants from A Pea in the Pod, so now I have 4 pairs of pants in my regular rotation!
Sleep: Some nights are better than others. Occasionally a baby will be in a position that makes it uncomfortable for me to lay down or I'll feel short of breath. However, I am still getting decent sleep for the most part with about an average of 4 bathroom trips and a few position shifts throughout the night.
Best moment this week: Our dear friends Roberts (who is also Markus' cousin) and Alyssa came to visit us this weekend! I was so grateful I could make it out for lunch yesterday! It was great to catch up with them, as we miss all the time we were able to spend with them while living in Chicago.
Miss Anything? Well, I am missing my desserts and not having to think so much about what I'm going to eat (i.e., carb counting). I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes this week and I'm not happy about it... more on that below.
Movement: Tons!
Food cravings: Nothing really, but watching someone else eat something that I'd like to have is hard!
Belly measurement: Biggest part of the belly is now 44 inches!
Gender: 3 Boys!!
Appointment Update: I left this week's appointment in tears after being diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I know it's not my fault and has to do with the hormones being released by the placentas blocking insulin. The OB said he was not surprised. I have had a hard time coming to terms with this diagnosis and I think working in the public health field and being someone who when not pregnant eats healthy and is very active somehow makes it harder for me. But, it is what it is and I have other friends who have had it as well. I'll have to go to a dietitian and diabetes educator and check my sugar at home. I obviously failed the 1-hour glucose tolerance test -- by only 4 points -- and had to do the 3-hour. To any other multiple moms doing the 3-hour: I recommend calling the lab beforehand and requesting a place to lie down. We had a private room with a recliner and I brought my body pillow and Kindle with headphones. During hours 2 and 3 I fell asleep while listening to guided meditation, which made the process much more bearable. During hour 1 I thought I was going to get sick a few times. I ended up having a normal fasting, I passed the 1-hour, failed the 2-hour by 30 points and then failed the 3-hour by 1 point. Bummer. In other news, we had a growth ultrasound this week and everything looked good! Baby B is still having some issues with the blood flow through the cord, but everyone is doing well! I also don't need to have cervix checks anymore.

Babies weigh:
Baby A - 3.3 lbs (above average!)
Baby B - 2.1 lbs (average)
Baby C - 2.6 lbs (average)

Prayers: Praying to now make it through week 28! Praying for Baby B's growth to not be affected by the blood flow in the cord. Praying for me to be able to manage the GD through diet and for it to never pose an issue for me going forward.
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No -- but still having itchy belly.
Mood: It's been a challenging week, but trying to keep positive about the GD.
Looking forward to: Hitting our next milestone of 28 weeks on Monday

27 week belly (6 weeks until our goal, can you believe it!?)

26 week update

How far along: 26 weeks 6 days
Weight gain/loss: I was 180 at my appointment this week (43 lb. gain). So, I have gained 3 pounds since my last visit! I think we're on track...
Symptoms: Congestion/nose bleeds (we buy Kleenex in bulk now), feeling more pressure if I stand for too long, tired, harder to breathe & getting acid reflux when laying down.
Maternity clothes: This week I ordered a long sleeve PJ tee from Victoria's Secret in large for the hospital, a cute blue polka dot nursing nightdress in medium from Baby Be Mine and two Motherhood Maternity nursing tanks (two for $22 -- a steal!) from Poshmark.
Sleep: Not too much new here. I have had some trouble breathing when laying down. Those lungs are getting crushed!
Best moment this week: I'm always glad to get an update on things at our appointments. Most everything went well this week (more below). We also got a great deal on the Peg Perego Triplette stroller from a fellow triplet mom in the local Moms of Multiples group. The stroller is huge and we haven't yet tried fitting it in our car with all car seats installed. Not sure it will fit unless it is strapped to the roof or on some sort of outside rack! The main reason for buying it is so that my mom and I can walk around our neighborhood and along the bike path by our house with all three babies. Our car seats clip into the stroller and then when the little guys are bigger, we will switch to the toddler seats that it came with.
Miss Anything? There are times when I miss life in our little apartment in Chicago and miss being able to go out with my husband and our friends. I am incredibly grateful for this pregnancy and our current living situation, but I think it's normal to have these feelings.
Movement:  Still lots of movement! Sometimes its a tad painful/uncomfortable when one of the babies is really pressing its head or bottom into my belly. It feels like they are trying to push their way through! If I lightly press where they are pushing, they will usually move a little bit and the pressure will subside.
Food cravings: Red pears and celery! Finally craving some healthy foods ;) The craving for baked goods/desserts, however, has not disappeared!
Belly measurement: Biggest part of the belly is 43 inches. Interestingly, despite some weight gain the belly hasn't changed much.
Gender: 3 Boys!!
Prayers: Our appointment this week went well overall. My blood pressure is good, babies' fluids are good. My cervix shrank a bit to around 2.6 from 3. Because I'm not having contractions or other symptoms the OB isn't concerned, as shortening will start to happen at this point. I'm praying it doesn't shorten much more and hope that by trying to minimize stair climbing/standing/walking/trips outside the house it may help. We do have to go for weekly visits now as Baby B was experiencing slower blood flow through his umbilical cord. The OB explained it to us and said that because Baby B is considered to be of appropriate size, he is not so concerned. If Baby B was much smaller than the others, then it would be a major red flag. This will be something that will need to be watched closely, so we will return next Friday. I'm praying that there will be no need to deliver early and that Baby B will continue to grow and thrive as he has been. I also had my 1-hour glucose test this week. I'm still waiting on results -- praying I passed!
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No -- but having major itchy belly. The whole front of my torso has been so itchy despite using belly oil every night and lotion several times per day.
Mood: Overall good.
Looking forward to: I'm very anxious to get an update next Friday on Baby B!

25 week update

How far along: 25 weeks 6 days
Weight gain/loss: My home scale has been reading 178-180 lbs. depending on time of day. It's hard to say if I've truly gained or not? I'm going to talk with the OB on Tuesday about my slowed weight gain/growth over the last few weeks. Last time they didn't seem concerned and mentioned weight could now fluctuate, but it feels like I should be still gaining.
Symptoms: Battled the tail end of my cold through Tuesday. So thankful to be better! However, the major congestion has now turned into the familiar mild congestion paired with mild nose bleeds. That's just how it goes! I've had a few bouts of feeling short of breath, it must be dependent on where the babies are pressing.  Showering has become pretty taxing as well. It's not so much the actual showering, as I have a lovely shower chair, but the drying off/putting on lotion/drying my hair part. I have to lie down afterward!
Maternity clothes: Nothing new here! Enjoying my borrowed maternity clothes :)
Sleep: Now that the cold has passed, I've been lucky to get some decent sleep. Overall, I have been feeling more tired lately and it's been harder to wake up from a nap!
Best moment this week: I'd say that our babies are still growing inside!
Miss Anything? Nothing in particular.
Movement:  Lots of movement! Now in addition to protruding body parts and pokes/kicks, I feel the babies rolling or changing positions. The best way I can describe it is sort of a like having a sea serpent under the skin haha!
Food cravings: Still really enjoying oranges! Otherwise, no cravings. My appetite really increased for a few days after my cold, so that's a good thing. I think part of the not eating as much as I had been also has to do with the fact that it's harder for me to get up multiple times to make something to eat.
Anything making you queasy or sick? No
Belly measurement: Biggest part of the belly is still 43 inches.
Gender: 3 Boys!!
Prayers: I'm very focused on making it to 28 weeks. I pray our babies keep growing well and that I continue to have the strength and health to carry them. I also pray I pass my 1-hour glucose test this week!
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No
Mood: Overall good. Every so often I become a bit overwhelmed and have what I'm calling a little hormonally-incuded cry.
Looking forward to: At this point every Monday when we hit a new week it is a reason to celebrate. I look forward to an update at this week's appointment. It won't be a full growth scan, but rather a check on fluid, heart rate and my cervix.

24 week update

How far along: 24 weeks 6 days
Weight gain/loss: Was 177 at my appointment this week. The nurse said it is normal to fluctuate a bit at this stage.
Symptoms: Unfortunately, I came down with a cold this week and I'm still sick as I type. Being pregnant and sick is not fun and = not much sleep at night. Otherwise, just the usual "non-cold" stuffy nose & nosebleeds, hip pain when sleeping.
Maternity clothes: Nothing much new here, spent most of the week in PJs!
Sleep: This week the hip pain hasn't been as bad at night! That's always a plus. Still getting up between 3-4 times per night to use the bathroom.
Best moment this week: The fact that our appointment went very well! There wasn't much to report, which after another growth ultrasound is good. Babies are measuring:
1lb. 13oz.
1lb. 11oz.
1lb. 5oz.
Our Baby B is still the little one, but the OB said as long as his growth continues progressing, it is OK. Baby C still has the fuzzy spots on his brain and heart, but again, the OB said these will likely disappear or won't be an issue. My cervix is still measuring around 3.2, which is good. Fluid levels are good! After our appointment we got to tour the NICU. It was really helpful to have our questions answered and to have a better understanding of what to expect with a NICU stay. If the babies are born at 34/35 weeks and have no major issues, there is a good chance our NICU stay would only be 2 weeks.
Miss Anything? Nothing in particular this week, although I can't wait to wear my normal wardrobe again!
Movement:  Lots of action!
Food cravings: Oranges/tangerines and at this exact moment...chocolate cake! Markus is going out in a bit, he may have to bring back a box of gluten free cake mix (note: I started writing this last night and he did in fact bring back cake mix -- we made it and it was delicious!). Overall my appetite has lessened over the last few weeks, hence a little less weight gain and less growth around the belly. Not sure if this is typical? I'll have to ask.
Anything making you queasy or sick? No
Belly measurement: Biggest part of the belly is just about 43 inches. The MFM OB doesn't measure the belly like the regular OB did, but I'm guessing I'm measuring something like 36 weeks?
Gender: 3 Boys!!
Prayers: At this point in time, each day is a huge milestone and a day our babies continue to grow and develop. Although each day is a big deal, our next target is the 28 week mark, then 30, 32, and our goal of 34 (or 35!).
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No
Mood: Overall good just bummed to be sick :(
Looking forward to: We are continuing to get the mini nursery in order. I'm excited to see how it looks when it's all done!

24 week belly
(because I'm still sick and feeling pretty awful, I thought no one needed to see my head in the shot this week haha!)

23 week update

How far along: 23 weeks 6 days
Weight gain/loss: Scale is reading 181 - pretty much outweighing my husband now!
Symptoms: Oh the usual congested/slight bloody nose, a few episodes of heartburn, hip pain when sleeping
Maternity clothes: My friend Rebecca who just had twins, sent along a whole bag of maternity clothes! I'm so excited to have some more options to wear :) I also ordered a pair of drawstring, underbelly skinny sweats from A Pea in the Pod in size large -- they came yesterday and are SOO comfy! Yay! I also got to sport my  dress from ASOS maternity at my shower this week (however had a bit of a breakdown trying to fit into maternity pantyhose. Bad idea. I ended up wearing leggings underneath).
Sleep: Unfortunately, I had some nights with really uncomfortable, painful hips this week. We put one of those egg shell mattresses over our mattress and it does help, but some nights just seem to be worse than others. If I tuck the down comforter under my hip, I get some relief, but the only true relief is sleeping sitting up or just getting up. I think my record for middle-of-the-night bathroom trips this week was 5!
Best moment this week: My beautiful baby shower! My aunt Astrida did such a lovely job organizing and decorating. Although several friends and family members couldn't be there, I was so excited to see everyone who came. Weather was perfect, a crisp fall day and a view of colorful fall leaves over the Grand River in Grand Rapids. Markus and I are so appreciative of everyone's love and generosity!
Miss Anything? My mother in law is in town and I missed being able to go shopping and lunching with her and my mom. Too much for me at this point :(  I'd love to go out to an apple orchard or go on a long walk and look at the fall leaves...
Movement:  Lots of action!
Food cravings: Nothing in particular this week...except Jimmy John's haha
Anything making you queasy or sick? No
Belly measurement: Biggest part of the belly is still around 42.5"
Gender: 3 Boys!!
Prayers: We are now at viability, so every day babies stay in is a miracle! I am grateful for every day they grow and continue to pray for their health and mine. 10-11 weeks until our goal!!
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No
Mood: Overall good
Looking forward to: We always look forward to our appointments, but there is always a bit of anxiety when having the detailed growth ultrasounds. We will get an update on how babies are doing at next week's 24-week scan. We will also get a tour of the NICU.

23 week belly - with my sister photobombing ;)

22 week update

How far along: 22 weeks 6 days
Weight gain/loss: I was 176 at this week's appointment (~39 lb gain)
Symptoms: The usual congested/slight bloody nose, a few episodes of heartburn, slight carpal tunnel in my hands (more so in the mornings)
Maternity clothes: Many triplet moms seem to outgrow maternity wear and I can definitely see this happening. On my shopping list is a pack of Hanes men's v-neck t-shirts to sleep in and who knows what kind of pants I'll need in a few weeks! I currently only have 3 pairs of pants that are comfortable -- only two of which I wear in public haha ;). I really thought my maternity leggings would be comfier, but the over belly band ends up feeling restricting and when I wear it folded down it feels a bit tight. My mom gifted me two cute maternity sweaters (size L) from Motherhood Maternity this week. I was so excited because when putting them on I felt cute and not frumpy haha.
Sleep: Still waking 3 times per night to use the restroom. Again, most nights I can sleep pretty well and then there are those nights my hips really start to hurt, so I just get up early and take a morning nap later.
Best moment this week: Not having any more sciatica! The chiropractor is helping a lot. My neck pain and shoulder blade pain have diminished as well. We received new bassinets and they're perfect! We had to return the original ones because they were only 26" tall and were meant as a bedside bassinet (we are setting up a mini nursery in the room across from our bedroom). I found these by Babyletto and they are actual mini cribs at 36" tall -- much better for me at 5'9" and Markus at 6'0". :)
Miss Anything? Deli sandwiches :)
Movement:  Babies are still very active!
Food cravings: Still craving those deli sandwiches and pumpkin everything.
Anything making you queasy or sick? Not really
Belly measurement: Biggest part of the belly is now 42.5"
Gender: 3 Boys!!
Prayers: At this past week's appointment the MFM OB initially thought Baby C had too much amniotic fluid, which can pose problems. After she consulted with their new MFM OB director, he felt it wasn't a concern and said "we shouldn't lose sleep over it." I continue to pray for our babies' health and all of their fluid levels. I pray for the strength to keep carrying these babies to our goal date.
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No
Mood: Overall good
Looking forward to: My upcoming baby shower and our next growth scan in a week and a half. We hit viability on Monday at 23 weeks which is a big deal!
Other: As I mentioned in a previous post, we've now fully transferred our care to the Maternal Fetal Medicine office rather than also seeing a regular OB. After talking to the new director at the MFM office, he would like their OBs to do our C-section and we will just be watching at each appointment, not really setting a date in advance quite yet. He said if things are going extremely well, he'd let me go to 35 weeks. That being said, our goal is still either the week of December 21 or December 28.

21 week update

How far along: 21 weeks 6 days
Weight gain/loss: Scale this week is reading 174-176 (37-39 lb gain)
Symptoms: Congested/slight bloody nose as usual, swollen ankles after a lot of activity over the weekend, sciatica -- this was so bad I couldn't walk or move on Wednesday night and Thursday. I called my OB and she recommended I seek out a chiropractor who specializes in pregnant women. I went for an appointment Friday and after about a day and a half, no sciatica! I also got heartburn for the first time, especially when laying down -- luckily a few Tums helped.
Maternity clothes: Placed yet another order through Motherhood Maternity. Ordered larger bras because my rib cage has now grown 6 inches and my bra extender is barely cutting it!
Sleep: I'm waking up pretty much every night at 12:00, 3:00 and 5:00/6:00 to use the bathroom. It is getting harder to turn over and get out of bed.
Best moment this week: Getting to see my friend Jentry get married! I was able to get a script for a wheelchair from my OB and had it delivered just in time for the wedding! My sister visited this weekend and we had a lovely "girl's day" with my mom on Sunday.
Miss Anything? Again, just being able-bodied! We've got 13 weeks until our goal, I pray every day to make it and I know staying pregnant is what our babies need to be born healthy. Some days it just gets hard carrying three!
Movement:  Babies are very active! They seem to be most active when I'm sitting in a reclined position. It does feel weird when I get a big body part pressing into my ribs. I love seeing & feeling them move around :)
Food cravings: Pumpkin everything! Now that it feels like fall I've had a strong craving for pumpkin. Unfortunately, I crave sweets pretty much all the time! I could probably eat a full loaf of pumpkin bread!
Anything making you queasy or sick? Eating too much at once, having heartburn.
Belly measurement: Biggest part of the belly is now 42 inches
Gender: 3 Boys!!
Prayers: I pray every day for our babies (especially for the twins' fluid and Baby C's heart & brain). I also pray for my health and the ability to carry our babies to our goal date.
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No
Mood: Overall good, tired
Looking forward to: Our 22 week appointment on Tuesday. Getting the mini-nursery in order.
Other: I got a good laugh when the man delivering my wheelchair asked if I was 8 or 9 months. Happened again when Markus and I went to get lunch and the guy at the take out window asked if we were on the way to the the hospital to deliver. Oh boy! ;)

20 week update

How far along: 20 weeks 4 days
Weight gain/loss: Weighed in at 170 at this week's appointment (33 lb gain)
Maternity clothes: My black sweatsuit came from Motherhood Maternity this week. It is now my favorite outfit -- so comfy! Realizing I will need to start wearing Markus' t-shirts to bed, I have only a few that are still loose. Received my maternity belt this week as well. It has been a lifesaver and makes such a difference when I'm walking/climbing stairs/standing.
Sleep: No major changes here. Luckily most nights I'm able to sleep on my side all night!
Best moment this week: By far finding out that the twins' fluid is now stable and equal! Prayers answered! The MFM OB we saw said all of their growth was excellent and they received great growth "report cards." Baby A is 13 oz, Baby B is 11 oz and Baby C is 13 oz. My cervix is measuring at 3 cm, which the OB said at this point "it doesn't get any better than that". She was so positive and made us feel everything is going well. She commented that I'm doing a great job and to continue doing what I'm doing. I am so grateful that I have been able to rest and take care of my body and our babies during this pregnancy.
Miss Anything? Not being congested and having nose bleeds (thankfully none nearly as scary as the ones I had a few weeks ago). I miss being able-bodied, but I know after our miracles are born I'll start to feel like myself again. I will likely never know what it's like to carry one baby, but I have to say carrying multiples is really hard work and hard on the body. In the latter part of my 20th week, I think I've also started developing pregnancy induced carpal tunnel in my hands. My hands feel bruised and the joints are stiff and painful. Oh yay :(
Movement: SO much action! The babies are moving like crazy now. Sometimes it's like huge pieces of popcorn are popping under my skin and I see something poking through my belly. The other day there was a head or a rear end sticking out and you could clearly feel it and see it protruding out. Markus has now felt the "popcorn" a few times, too :)  Interesting fact, we found out at our regular OB appointment that the babies form a triangle shape in my belly.
Food cravings: After watching the Food Network I really wanted a reuben sandwich. I know I can't have deli meat, so I was so excited when my mom and I went to Terra in Grand Rapids after my appointment and I got to have a reuben on gluten free bread. It was made with their own house made corned beef from a cut of grass fed beef, so that sounded OK to me!
Anything making you queasy or sick? Eating too much at once.
Belly measurement: Biggest part of the belly is still 40.5 inches. At 20 weeks I'm measuring 33 weeks!!
Gender: 3 Boys!!
Prayers: Baby C still has some fuzzy spots that appear to be some kind of cyst on his heart and in the brain, the OB is not concerned and commented these things are seen and typically go away. Praying this is the case and that we won't need to be concerned. Praying all babies' fluid continues to look stable!
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No
Mood: Overall good
Looking forward to: Seeing my sister next weekend!
Other: We found out from both OBs that our C-section will likely be scheduled right at 34 weeks on December 21! It's so nice to have a firm goal date in mind! We will try to schedule our regular OB to be the one who delivers the babies. It was also decided that to make our lives easier, we will just continue our care at the MFM OB office instead of also going to the regular OB. It becomes a lot of appointments, driving and coordinating, so we are glad this decision was made.

The triplets!

We didn't get any photos of Baby A this time because he was hiding behind Baby B the whole time.

19 week update

How far along: 19 weeks 6 days
Weight gain/loss: My home scale has been reading between 170-174 depending on the time of day - 33 to 37 lb gain!
Maternity clothes: Tried wearing some of my size small maternity pants this week and it was so uncomfortable :( Finally just ordered some black leggings and a black sweatsuit in size large from Motherhood Maternity, waiting for them to arrive!
Sleep: Most nights I'm still able to sleep on my side all night. Only major issue is my hips getting sore. It is getting a little harder to turn over and get out of bed!
Best moment this week: Finally saw the babies moving! More on that below... Also really enjoyed our Twins, Triplets & More class on Thursday night. This time we got to hear from and ask questions of a panel of twin & triplet parents. It was very helpful!
My aunt Astrida came to visit me this week, which was so nice! We talked for several hours and enjoyed some tea & pastries. She brought some adorable baby outfits and a cute mom duck and three baby ducks bath toy ;) Leaving many of our friends behind in Chicago (and having friends and family who live far away), it's hard not having face-to-face time with them. It was a nice change having a visitor!
Miss Anything? Being able to go to the grocery store and peruse the aisles. Markus took me to the store earlier in the week and pushed me in a wheelchair with a basket attached. My days of strolling around big stores are over! As far as food, I'm still dreaming about that Jimmy John's sandwich and champagne or wine! Lastly, not being constantly congested!
Movement: Was sitting in my lounge chair earlier in the week and finally felt that "popcorn" sensation women talk about. I could see parts of my belly moving like a piece of popcorn was popping under the skin. So cool!
Food cravings: No real cravings this week. Finding it a little harder to meet my 3,500-4,000 calorie needs, I just haven't been as hungry as in the first trimester.
Anything making you queasy or sick? Not really.
Belly measurement: Biggest part of the belly is now 40.5 inches
Gender: 3 Boys!!
Prayers: No appointments this week, so still just being thankful for every day our babies stay in and grow. Praying for our twins and for their fluid levels to stay stable.
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No. I do get itchy belly from time to time and ordered some Belli Elasticity Oil this week. I received a sample of it and it really helps, smells like lavender and has no toxic ingredients, so thought to order a full size.
Mood: Overall good. Resting at home can make me antsy from time to time, but I know I'm doing what's best for these babies. I did have a random crying spell last night -- I think from the physical overwhelm and hormones!
Looking forward to: My 20 week appointment on Tuesday. Praying all is well...

18 week update

How far along: 18 weeks 5 days
Weight gain/loss: Weighing in at 163 at this week's appointment - roughly 26 pounds gained
Maternity clothes: I honestly spend most of my time in sweats/comfy clothes. I feel like at this point I don't know how big I'll be toward the end, so I'm holding off on buying anything else. I day dream about walking around in cute maternity outfits and thought maternity style would be higher on my list, but comfort is absolutely number one. Yesterday we went to the DMV to get new licenses, it was nice to put on a normal outfit and spend some time on my make up.
Sleep: For the last few days in a row I've been able to sleep on my side all night! Yay! I slept sitting up from 5-8 am last night, but otherwise have slept until about 7-7:30 on my side without too much hip pain. Still taking naps on most days. I've taken two early morning naps in a reclining chair in the family room and that seems to be quite comfortable!
Best moment this week: We got our family car (a Ford Edge) this week, which was exciting! I also learned a few new things in our Baby Care and Twins, Triplets & More classes. I'd usually say my appointment, but this week it seemed to cause me a bit more stress. However, it was absolutely still a gift to see our babies on the ultrasound.
Miss Anything? My body is definitely signaling me to slow down even more. However, sitting around all day is hard for me. I want to go on walks and do things around the house, I just have to be mindful of how I'm feeling and when it's too much. When I climb the stairs it is now helping if I stop halfway, otherwise my pulse beats so loudly in my head it feels like it will explode.
Movement: After talking with the OB at my appointment, it seems most of what I'm feeling is my uterus stretching. It happens at least once a day, but there are times it has been coming on after too much standing/walking.
Food cravings: I hate to admit this as someone who eats fairly healthfully, but McDonald's crispy chicken sandwiches are the only thing I've been craving lately. I had two this week! On a healthier note, I also can't get enough organic gala apples -- I'm usually eating two per day. Again, I am trying to really focus on my protein intake. There are recommendations out there to drink several Ensure or Boost protein shakes per day to prevent/lessen twin to twin transfusion. I tried the Ensure vanilla shakes and they are terrible! The ingredients in Ensure and Boost are pretty awful as well, so I've been making my own protein shakes with whey protein powder from Whole Foods (had my parents pick up some more when they were in Chicago!). I'd like to get some organic versions of Ensure/Boost, so I may order some I saw at Whole Foods on Amazon.
Anything making you queasy or sick? Just getting full too fast or going too long without eating! I also haven't really craved coffee lately, so I think I'm going to give it up for the rest of the pregnancy unless I feel like I absolutely need my 8 oz! I was a bit scared to drink it after the nose bleeds last week (luckily I only had one mild one this week, vaseline, saline spray and drinking lots of orange juice seem to help!)
Belly measurement: Biggest part of the belly is now 40 inches!
Gender: 3 Boys!!
Appointment Update & Prayers: After I had my 18 week ultrasound done (they just took heart rates, measured my cervix and assessed amniotic fluid for each baby), the tech brought in the MFM OB to take a further look. After she watched the twins movement and fluid for a while, she pointed out that the measurements of fluid can vary based on the baby's position and the way the tech takes the measurement. She ended up changing the tech's initial measurement of 2 to 3.5 for Baby B -- it was around 7 for Baby A. There are several markers that go into a Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome diagnosis, with fluid only being one, and so far she is not concerned. She acknowledged that I appeared worried when she started talking about it and assured me that at this time there is no diagnosis and she will continue to watch the twins closely. If necessary, we'll go to weekly monitoring. I am doing my best not to worry about Twin to Twin Transfusion. It's not easy. I pray we will not have to encounter Twin to Twin and that the differences in the twins' fluid will remain stable and no other signs will arise.
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No
Mood: Overall good. A little worried this week, but feeling better each day after the appointment.
Looking forward to: My 20 week appointment. I just want to know how the little guys are doing!

17 week update

How far along: 17 weeks 4 days
Weight gain/loss: My scale at home seems to be a little off from the scale at my OB office, but I'm somewhere around 160-162.
Maternity clothes: Nothing new here.
Sleep: The first few hours of sleeping at night are comfortable and restful, but still waking between 4-6 am to change to a sitting up position. Still napping for about 1-1.5 hours per day on most days.
Best moment this week: No appointments this week. We celebrated my birthday this week by going to dinner at Charley's Crab in Grand Rapids. I enjoyed a wedge salad, King crab legs, sweet potatoes and key lime pie! This is Markus' last week before both working and starting school, so enjoying the time we do have together now. I also forgot to mention that we decided on first names after our last scan, but we are keeping them a secret and will name each baby once they are born.
Miss Anything? Still wishing I could deep clean & organize! I cleaned our bathroom top to bottom -- felt really exhausted afterward -- probably will be my last time doing that for now. Not having my pulse beating loudly in my ears would be nice. I don't know if this has to do with the increased blood volume, but it is so distracting and annoying. Speaking of increased blood volume, I also got two very scary nosebleeds this week :( I really hate them. It's a normal occurrence in pregnancy, but it is very unpleasant.
Movement: Not feeling much this week. Felt a few pokes/tightness both on the right and left once or twice.
Food cravings: No strong cravings lately! However, I don't know that I'll stop having a sweet tooth for gluten free baked goods (cookies/cupcakes/donuts) & the occasional ice cream!
Anything making you queasy or sick? It seems lately I really don't crave anything and no food sounds particularly good. I'm just eating because I'm hungry and know I have to, not due to cravings. I'm trying to focus on my protein intake and keep that up as much as I can (100 g + per day).
Belly measurement: Biggest part of the belly is measuring 39" - growing!
Gender: 3 Boys!!
Prayers: Have been praying for all of our babies, especially Baby B. At next week's appointment we won't be checking detailed growth, just heart rate and my cervix. I'd like to ask the tech if we can at least take the crown to rump measurement to get a sense of where they are in growth. Perhaps they will do that anyway.
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No
Mood: Overall good!
Looking forward to: Our 18 week appointment! Next week we also start our classes at the hospital. We are taking Baby Care; Twins, Triplets and More (2 sessions); and C-Sections. I'd like to take the breastfeeding class, but may wait to see what we learn in the Triplets class before I sign up.

16 week update

How far along: 16 weeks 4 days
Weight gain/loss: At this week's OB appointment I was 159
Maternity clothes: I got a black maternity maxi skirt on Poshmark for $13 -- a steal! SO comfortable
Sleep: Still struggling in this department. However, last night I tried sleeping with two pillows under my head and for the first time in days I didn't have neck pain when I woke up! Still trying to find the best sitting up position -- I may need more pillows! What a production...
Best moment this week: Our 16 week anatomy scan. The only tough part was that it was 2 hours long, so the techs told me to let them know if I got dizzy or nauseous (at one point I did, but propping up my head on two pillows helped). We saw so much movement and action! Babies are very active and doing well overall -- I'll share details about the results below.
Miss Anything? Nothing in particular this week. I suppose doing "all out" cleaning -- I love to clean & organize!
Movement: I asked the OB if what I've been feeling sounds like movement and she said it could be or it could be ligaments. Still feeling that same tightness/poking on the right side occasionally.
Food cravings: No strong cravings the last few days. I had this delicious cinnamon hazelnut coffee a few weeks ago from Ferris Coffee and have been thinking about it ever since, so we went to the Ferris store and bought some. I wasn't drinking any coffee during the beginning of the pregnancy, or very much at all during IVF, but one day when I went back to it, it's been hard to stop. Every doctor I've talked to says 1-2 8oz servings per day is totally safe and fine. I have less than 8 oz in the morning and that's it. As we get closer I'll talk to the OB again and see if I should cut it out. I think as it gets cooler it'll be easier to drink decaf tea -- I just don't crave tea in the summer!
Anything making you queasy or sick? Nope
Belly measurement: At our OB appointment I was 16 weeks 1 day, belly measuring 23 weeks! :-o Belly is about 10 inches bigger than pre-pregnancy.
Gender: I still can't believe it... 3 BOYS!! Wow! We are in for a wild ride ;)
Prayers: As I mentioned above, all babies are doing well and all anatomy checked out just fine during the scan. Baby A (twin) is in the lead for growth, followed by Baby C (singleton) -- both measuring 2 days ahead. Baby B (twin) is measuring 3 days behind, but that has been the trend so far with him (measuring 2-4 days behind). They did identify that Baby B has a single artery umbilical cord and velamentous cord insertion -- where the cord is inserted into the placental membrane and not the main part of the placenta. This could be causing him to get a bit less nourishment, resulting in slower growth. The good thing is, there are no red flags with his anatomy. The MFM OB we met with was wonderful and explained it very clearly to us. Baby B may just be the "runt", which is common in identicals for one to be smaller. We are just now praying that his growth continues to improve week to week. As long as it's going upward on the growth chart -- not declining or plateauing -- it is OK. Another great thing is no signs of twin twin transfusion. The twins' placenta is still low and considered previa, but the bulk of it is to the posterior. Baby C had a few minor things pop up, but the OB said she was hesitant to even mention them, as they would likely disappear. At this time, she is not recommending an amnio. We will check heart rates and my cervix in 2 weeks and growth again in 4 weeks. I'm praying for all 3 little guys -- especially for Baby B's growth. Cervix is still good around 3.5, praying for it to stay around that number.
Labor signs: No
Stretch marks: No
Mood: Overall good!
Other: The MFM OB told me that if I was working full time right now, this would've been my last week! At 20 weeks, I'll be on what she called "couch potato" rest.

16 week bump (looking a little tired!)
